Galaxy Link Limited (galaxylink) was incorporated in Hong Kong on September 27, 1995. and conducted business as an internet service provider (ISP) with dial up access, web hosting, email and ftp services.

Galaxy Link Limited is registered with OFTA with PNETS (Public Non-Exclusive Telecommunication Service) License no. 186. The ISP business was soon overwhelmed by large corporations like Hong Kong Telecom (now PCCW). Galaxylink had to look elsewhere for business continuation.

In early 1996 the award winning architectural practice Anthony Ng Architects Limited, had just landed a number of huge projects in Tung Chung, and was looking for assistance in document management. Because of the size of the development projects, large number of documents were circulated among project collaborators. Keeping track of all these documents and making them accessible at all times became a big challenge. The collaborators included clients, architects, consultants, experts, contractors and suppliers. Galaxylink was called in to tackle the problem and to come up with a solution. The concept of ANAWeb was conceived, studied, developed and implemented. ANAWeb was a 100% web-based intranet system designed by architects for architects.

At the same time, the company was going for ISO 9000 quality management certification. For compliance, company activities had to be documented. ANAWeb handled both tasks concurrently with flying colors. In addition, an electronic technical library was set up to access Rules and Regulation, Codes of Practice, Specifications, Laws of Hong Kong. The system also handled staff attendance, leave applications and timesheet entries. Specifications and Standards were uploaded for reference.

At the peak, there were 75 users to the system in their Wanchai Office and another fifteen staff on site. Soon word went around among the architects community. Other practices paid visits to the company to share experience. There were visits by government departments such as Housing Authority, Housing Society and ASD Architectural Services Department. The development was covered by Hinge Magazine. There were talks given at the HKIA Hong Kong Institute of Architects and at internet seminars and conferences. Anthony Ng Architects Limited was the heralded as the pioneer in the use of internet technology in the industry.

"...there is an economy in the number of support staff and an increased efficiency in the administrative duties of professionals improving the company working structure, allowing further financial investment into the professional development of employees, internal R&D and the company as a whole."

"...the history and particulars of project data and tasks can be searched and tracked retaining continuity regardless of re-staffing and individual accountability"

"...sharing of information and knowledge across the Web has freed up the workspace for greater emphasis on design, creativity and innovation."

In august 1999, Galaxylink took up a new challenge at Shiu Wing Steel Limited, a steel product manufacturing and trading company, the only one of its kind in Hong Kong, and a major supplier of high tensile deformed steel bars for the local construction industry. Shiu Wing Steel Limited had a staff of 300 of which 100 were computer users.

The company works from an office in central and a plant at Tap Shek Kok, beyond Tun Mun in the New Territories. The office was connected to the plant with 6x19k leased lines for the RAMUS system. RAMUS was running on HP3000 platform, with a hp proprietary HP's MPE Operating System. RAMUS was no longer supported. The hardware platform was also soon to be obsolete. A separate system Frontline, was in operation for inventory control and preventive maintenance, it was operating on Microsoft DOS. Due to licensing limitation, only 4 persons could access the system.

The plant office and warehouse building was being put up at Tap Shek Kok. Galaxylink had the opportunity to design the network and the entire system from scratch. A fiber optic link was laid between the new office warehouse building and the plant control room. At first, wireless LAN was proposed for link between the control room and the plant offices spread out on the plant site, including the wharf office at the pier and the customer warehouse offices one at each end of the site. However, upon testing, it was discovered that the nature of the products handled, being steel, created a lot of magnetic interference with wireless signal. Even twisted cables did not solve the problem, in the end additional fiber optic cables had to be installed.

The Shiu Wing Steel plant production network was already quite advanced, The production application ANSALDO was already running on fiber optics network. ANSALDO was propriety product, a black box. It is a read only system from proprietary displays. Users could not even print-screen, not to say gathering data for analyses. Luckily, a series of Siemens PLCs were installed on all machines to controls. There were 10,000 addresses that could be read in the system. The nodes could generate production data up to 24 times per second. Initially, the PLCs were hardware in the form of interface cards. In recent years Siemens have introduced a Software PLC which is a software installed on a PC that simulate a hardware PLC. Not only that. It could even gather read and store data from the hardware PLCs on the network. This was a major breakthrough. This means that we can read all the data generated at all these nodes on the production network. Galaxylink have written a visual basic program that communicates with the Siemens Software PLC. The application asks for data generated by a PLC by asking and getting data when available, the data is then transferred to the intranet database. Up to the minute production reports generated can now be read by users over the intranet system.

In addition two systems are deployed for quality control testing, chemical composition and physical testing of steel products are used by the quality control department. The two systems were running on DOS version of proprietary software and are attached to the testing machines. Fox-Pro program were developed for capturing data from the two testing systems. Galaxylink has provided an interface for capturing data from the legacy Fox Pro application and obtained data for producing mill certificates and stockist certificates as required by the government. Eventually, it is hoped that one single web based intranet system will handle all the functions mentioned above. The intranet system has been under study, research, design and coding since late 1999 and is being implemented now. Because of its wide coverage and complicated nature and the amount of information gathered, implementation has to be in conducted phases. It is hoped that full implementation can be achieved in the fourth quarter of 2006.

In February, 2001 Galaxylink added to its portfolio Wong & Ouyang (Hong Kong) Ltd., the largest architectural/engineering practice in Hong Kong. There were 300 staff in the company of which 200 were computer users. Galaxylink took over the entire network for rationalization. At the moment of handover, there were eleven servers, at the end, there were four, of which two were clustered servers for the intranet application, an internet server and a server for storage of drawings. the network was also simplified to a single protocol TCP/IP.

There were Lotus Notes, Solaris and Windows. In the beginning there were four people in the it department a manager, two technical support staff and one Lotus Notes specialist just to take care of email. At the end, there were only two technical support staff. All two hundred desktops were replaced, the network was rationalized. Executives were given laptops, a corporate web site was created. Document management system similar to ANAWeb but completely re-written, was put in place, the project was spread over 18 months.

In early 2005 galaxylink has taken up Sunshine Press Limited, a well established printing company with office in Hong Kong and printing facilities in China. Many modules and functions developed for Shiu Wing Steel existing development of Shiu Wing Steel Limited and the two architectural firms will be re-used for the printing industry. In addition Galaxylink shall be adding the printing industry specific applications to the system calling it the Graphics Arts Extension to Credo. With the Graphic Arts extension, a paper calculator will be added, there will be a quotation system. The quotation system will be an end to end MIS system for the Graphic Arts Industry (a wider term for the printing industry, which includes prepress, press and postpress processes). The Graphic Arts Extension will be JDF (job definition format) compliant. JDF is an initiative by CIP4, a graphic arts industry standard to facilitate different participants in the graphic industry to develop equipment and systems that can talk to one another. Participants in the JDF development include Adobe, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Man MAN Roland, printing equipment manufactures as well as many mis developers.

Moviola Productions Limited is a well known commercial film production company producing top quality commercial films for advertising agencies and direct clients. Projects featured included the MTR, Disney, Pepsi, Yakult, McDonalds. At that time Moviola was using a in house developed for as its quotation system. Unfortunately, the system crashed due to viral attack. The backup was not properly done. Even worse, the source code of the development was not kept by the development house. Galaxylink took the opportunity toredevelope completely new web-based intranet system. Functions included quotation/cost control system, talent casting system, shooting locations as well as databases for wardrobe, equipmentt, lighting systems. The Moviola Intranet is shared by their Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore operations

With experience gathered from the wide client base, Galaxylink has accumulated a good collection of different business processes in web-based applications. This marks the birth of Credo. Galaxylink will continue to collect more and more industry applications and their domain knowledge and incorporate them into the credo system, strengthening credo both horizontally by adding more and more business processes and vertically by adding more and more industry specific domain knowledge. credo will eventually be a generic system with applications packaged for a wide range of industries. Initial targeted industries include apparel, legal practices, contractors and accounting firms.
